Right Tree, Right Place

We start by looking at the site. How much sun does the spot get? How does water move across it after a hard rain? What is underground, and how close is the nearest structure, sidewalk, or power line?

A red maple that looks perfect as a five-gallon sapling reaches sixty feet with a root system to match. Planting it eight feet from a foundation creates a problem that shows up a decade later.

Middle Tennessee soil is often clay-heavy and drains slowly. Native and adapted species handle that far better than nursery favorites bred for other regions. We frequently recommend oaks, hackberry, tulip poplar, and serviceberry, depending on the site.
