Nashville’s summer storm season — typically running from late May through August — brings fast-moving thunderstorms, damaging straight-line winds, and the occasional tornado warning that can turn a healthy-looking tree into a hazard in minutes.

Why Nashville Trees Are Especially Vulnerable
Our region’s mix of clay-heavy soil, sudden downpours, and gusty frontal storms creates a tough combination. Heavy rain saturates the ground, loosening root systems just as wind gusts hit their peak — which is exactly why so many trees topple during summer storms rather than breaking apart. Add in trees that are already stressed from drought, disease, or improper pruning, and you’ve got a recipe for costly damage.
Steps to Prepare Your Trees
1. Schedule a pre-storm-season inspection. A certified arborist can spot warning signs you’d likely miss — cracked branches, fungal growth at the base, included bark, or root issues — long before a storm puts them to the test.
2. Prune dead or weak limbs. Dead wood is the first thing to come down in high winds, and it’s often the most dangerous because you can’t predict where it’ll land. Regular pruning also improves airflow through the canopy, reducing wind resistance overall.
3. Thin dense canopies. A tree with a thick, heavy canopy catches more wind, putting extra strain on the trunk and root system. Selective thinning lets wind pass through rather than push against the tree.
4. Check for root damage or soil compaction. Trees with shallow or restricted root systems are far more likely to uproot in saturated soil. If you’ve had recent construction, heavy equipment, or persistent drainage issues near your trees, it’s worth having the roots evaluated.
5. Remove or cable hazard trees. Some trees are simply too far gone to save — leaning trunks, large cavities, or extensive decay are red flags. In other cases, cabling and bracing can reinforce a structurally weak but otherwise healthy tree.
6. Mind the distance to structures. Trees with limbs overhanging your roof, power lines, or driveway deserve extra attention. Even a moderate-sized limb can cause serious damage falling from height in a 50+ mph gust.
